2006 event
October 12, 2006, the Rochester Area Transportation Supervisors Association (RATSA) orchestrated its tenth annual Operation Safe Stop Press Conference and re-enactment of a child being struck by a passing motorist at the Henrietta Fireman's Training Center.
Operation Safe Stop seeks to promote school bus safety through education and enforcement efforts. Operation Safe Stop is a cooperative project supported by the New York State Governor's Traffic Safety Committee, the New York State Education Department, the New York Association for Pupil Transportation, the New York State School Bus Contractors Association, the student transportation industry and state, county, city and local law enforcement agencies to educate motorists who violate the New York State's Vehicle & Traffic Law (#1174) by passing stopped school buses.
Our Press conference was well attended with people concerned about school bus safety. We had 11 school districts, 1 contractor represented, over 20 law enforcement professionals, local emergency responders, Monroe County Traffic Safety Board members, elected and appointed officials. The Press Conference was covered by three television stations that promoted the October 12, 2006, Operation Safe Stop Event.
Special thanks to Maggie Brooks (County Executive), Sheriff O'Flynn, Assemblyman David Koon, Assemblywoman Susan John, Assemblyman Joe Errigo, Assemblyman Joseph Morelle and Senator Joe Robach for speaking at our event on behalf of student safety!
